Beginner's Cooking Club

The Beginner's Cooking Club is an after-school cooking program for students in grades 6, 7, or 8 to introduce children to healthy eating in a practical setting that encourages skill development. This is an after-school program that runs during the school year, although adequate planning time prior to beginning the cooking club is required.

The cooking sessions take place in the school kitchen and can run for a series of 6-10 weeks, with each session lasting about 2 hours. Students learn simple food preparation techniques, proper table etiquette, sanitation and food safety in a fun, safe and inviting atmosphere.

The Club is funded by the Healthy Living Hamilton. The City of Hamilton Public Health & Community Services Department helps schools who are interested in the Club start the program.

Volunteers, parents and teachers are to attend a 2-3 hour training session.  Additional planning time will depend on what resources the school already has and the number of volunteers available to assist. Once the sessions begin, 2-4 volunteers will be required to spend 3-4 hours, once a week, for five weeks.
