The goal of the Food Bank Sampling Program is to promote healthy eating knowledge and skills in food bank recipients. Each month, volunteers at the Salvation Army on Bay St. prepare a healthy recipe using food bank ingredients. Clients are offered samples, cooking advice, further information, encouragement, relevant flavourings and fresh produce. Improved nutritional choices can reduce rates of chronic disease.
Low income individuals may not have access to healthy food, and they may not have the skills or recipes to make healthy meals. Evaluation of this program indicates that 78% of those tasting the recipe planned to prepare it at home. The recipients were appreciative of the information, encouragement and samples and were able to report what they had learned.
